New Shelter Opens for Homeless FamiliesLINDSAY, Ontario, July 8, 2003 — A Place Called Home Residence celebrated its official opening today in Lindsay, Ontario. A Place Called Home is an 11-bed emergency shelter and transitional housing facility for homeless families and the disabled. "This new shelter demonstrates the Government of Canada's commitment to provide housing for homeless families not just in large cities, but in smaller communities as well," said John O`Reilly, Member of Parliament for Haliburton-Victoria-Brock on behalf of the Honourable Steven Mahoney, Secretary of State responsible for Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation. "Federal strategies supporting homeless families and disabled people are helping those most in need at the community level, and this project is a prime example." "This project is a credit to our community, clearly demonstrating that we are a caring community - ensuring that everyone has a safe place to return to at the end of their day," said Zita Devan, Chair of A Place Called Home. "This shelter truly has been a joint effort drawing on government, private funding, individual donors, local businesses and our community. The renovations to the house were made possible through the support of CMHC. The Board and Staff of A Place Called Home wish to express our thanks to all who helped make this project possible." Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC) committed a total of $144,000 to the project through a combination of its Residential Rehabilitation Assistance Programs (RRAP). The various RRAP programs are designed to provide financial assistance in order to repair existing accommodation for low-income households, convert non-residential properties into affordable housing and to modify housing to improve access for low-income disabled persons.
