Edmison House Celebrates Re-Opening After Extensive Renovations

PETERBOROUGH, Ontario, April 23, 2004 — Edmison House celebrated its official re-opening today thanks to $240,000 in funding by the Government of Canada, through Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC). Edmison House, a halfway home, sponsored by St. Leonard’s Society of Peterborough, was re-opened by Peter Adams, Member of Parliament for Peterborough.

"The renovations to this magnificent old building will allow St. Leonard’s Society to continue their important work in the Peterborough community for many years to come," said Peter Adams, Member of Parliament for Peterborough. "This project is an excellent example of the Government of Canada’s commitment to providing help to community members most in need".

"The residents, staff and Board of Directors are extremely pleased with the outcome of this partnership with CMHC," said St. Leonard’s Board President, J. Oliver Doyle. "We have dramatically improved the safety and security of this special building which dates back to the 1830’s. It will now provide more comfortable and manageable accommodations to the benefit of our residents".

The building, which is over 170 years old, presented many unusual challenges during the course of the renovations. Finding a construction company with the necessary expertise to properly renovate such an old structure was the most significant obstacle.

Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC) committed funding to the project through a combination of its Residential Rehabilitation Assistance Programs (RRAP). The various RRAP programs are designed to provide financial assistance in order to repair existing accommodation for low-income households, convert non-residential properties into affordable housing and to modify housing to improve access for low-income disabled persons.
