$8.7 Million Allocated for Affordable Housing in OntarioTORONTO, Ontario, November 5, 2004 — The Government of Canada and the Government of Ontario today allocated more than $8.7 million to help fund seven pilot projects that will create 325 units of affordable housing for low-income people in Ontario. The announcement was made by the Honourable Joseph Fontana, Minister of Labour and Housing, and the Honourable David Caplan, Ontario's Minister of Public Infrastructure Renewal. "The Government of Canada is committed to providing quality affordable housing for those Canadians who need it most," said Minister Fontana. "Housing is an important part of people life and of our commitment to build healthy, sustainable communities. We look forward to working closely with our provincial and municipal partners to continue to address these needs in Ontario and across the country." "Our government understands that one of our fundamental responsibilities is to help to provide affordable housing for people in the province who need it," said Minister Caplan. "By strengthening our communities, we are providing our people with a quality of life that is second to none." The funding announced today will help to create a total of 325 new affordable housing units under the Canada-Ontario Affordable Housing Program. The funding includes $8.1 million to create 300 units in six projects in Ottawa, and $675,000 to create 25 units in one project in Waterloo Region. The Canada-Ontario Affordable Housing Agreement is a five-year commitment that will create affordable housing units in Ontario. This partnership combines $245 million in Government of Canada funding with matching contributions from the Government of Ontario, municipalities and other private and non-profit partners.
