Night Light for Niagara Youth

NIAGARA FALLS, Ontario, November 25, 2004 — The Night Light Youth Shelter opened its doors today. The new six-bed shelter will allow The Boys and Girls Club of Niagara to offer improved services to abused and homeless youth.

"Providing a safe and secure environment to our youth is vital," said the Honourable Tony Valeri, Leader of the Government in the House of Commons, on behalf of the Honourable Joe Fontana, Minister of Labour and Housing. "The services offered by Night Light Youth Shelter will help keep young people safe and help them get the services they need to succeed in the community. It is an excellent example of the Government of Canada's commitment to giving people the resources they need to climb out of poverty."

The renovation project was made possible thanks to over $75,000 in funding from Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation's (CMHC) Shelter Enhancement Program.

Night Light Youth shelter provides a full spectrum of prevention to intervention programs including leadership, education, and resistance training. Recognizing the impact these programs have in building healthy communities, the Boys and Girls Club of Niagara will be working in close consultation with the Region of Niagara Children Services Division, the Niagara Regional Police, and local community committees.

CMHC's Shelter Enhancement Program offers financial assistance for the repair, rehabilitation and improvement of existing shelters for women and their children, youth and men who are victims of family violence, as well as the acquisition or construction of new shelters and second stage housing where needed.

CMHC is Canada's national housing agency with a mandate to help Canadians gain access to safe, quality and affordable housing. CMHC supports the Canadian housing industry and improves the living conditions of Canadians through mortgage loan insurance and securitization, assisted housing, research and information transfer and the promotion of Canadian housing exports.
