Meeting to Make Housing Happen in PeterboroughPETERBOROUGH, Ontario, May 25, 2005 — Local affordable housing advocates and community partners gathered together to stimulate ideas about the development of new low-cost housing and housing services for residents of the Peterborough area. The Honourable Joe Fontana, Minister of Labour and Housing; Peterborough Member of Parliament Peter Adams; Joyce Potter, President of the Canadian Housing Renewal Association, and representatives from the Peterborough Affordable Housing Foundation (PAHF) attended today's breakfast event. The PAHF led the think tank, which was organized and hosted by the Foundation Building Breakfast. "By working cooperatively with our community partners, we can ensure Canadians can have a safe, affordable place to call home," said Minister Fontana. "Today's Foundation Building Breakfast is an excellent opportunity to share ideas and strategies as we look towards future development in affordable housing at a community level." "This is an excellent opportunity to collaborate and network with our community partners as we look towards future development in affordable housing in the Peterborough area," said MP Adams. "It is important to the Government of Canada to work with communities from a grassroots level to address this issue." "The need for affordable housing in Ontario is so great" said housing advocate Joyce Potter who was attending the Peterborough breakfast. "We're encouraged by the recent signing of the federal-provincial housing agreement in Ontario and the promise of $1.6 billion for affordable housing in the federal budget". PAHF supports new and existing community-based providers of affordable housing and associated services. By securing permanent, invested and donated sources of revenue, the organization is able to respond to local opportunities and foster new approaches to ongoing housing needs. In Peterborough, the Government of Canada, through Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC), has committed $3.3 million through the Canada-Ontario Affordable Housing Program Agreement for affordable housing.
