$10.25 Million for Affordable Housing Allocated to Windsor

WINDSOR, Ontario, September 2, 2005 — The Governments of Canada and Ontario have allocated $10.25 million to the City of Windsor as a first wave of funding under the new $602 million Canada-Ontario Affordable Housing Program. This allocation will produce 120 new units of affordable housing, and provide rent subsidies for up to 140 lower-income households.

The announcement was made today by the Honourable Joe Fontana, Federal Minister of Labour and Housing; Dwight Duncan, MPP Windsor-St. Clair; and the Honourable Sandra Pupatello, MPP Windsor West, Ontario's Minister of Community and Social Services and Minister Responsible for Women's Issues.

"Housing is an important part of life and today's announcement will help us to move forward on our commitment to build healthy, safe, and affordable communities in Ontario," said Minister Fontana. "We are pleased to work in close cooperation with our partners in order to provide Windsor residents with safe, affordable, and comfortable housing in their communities."

"I am delighted with this $10.25 million allocation for affordable housing in the City of Windsor," said MPP Duncan. "The McGuinty government is committed to increasing the supply of affordable housing throughout the province as quickly as possible, and this allocation will enable us to make a very positive impact on the lives of people in our community."

"Affordable housing is fundamental to the well-being, vitality and strength of families and the communities in which they live," said Minister Pupatello. "The $10.25 million allocated for affordable housing in Windsor shows that the McGuinty government is back in the housing business, with a firm commitment to ensuring safe, affordable housing for the people of our province."

Housing allowances/rent supplements will enable municipalities to respond immediately to requests for affordable housing in their communities by working with both private and non-profit landlords to take advantage of the current high vacancy rate in the rental market.

A second wave of funding will follow that will allocate the balance of funds for affordable housing in Ontario.
