Affordable Housing Project Begins Construction [Paris, Ontario]

PARIS, Ontario, November 9, 2005 — The Government of Canada, the Government of Ontario, and the County of Brant held a plaque dedication ceremony today to mark the start of construction on a project that will create 24 units of affordable housing in Paris, County of Brant, under the Canada–Ontario Affordable Housing Program.

Lloyd St. Amand, MP for Brant, on behalf of the Honourable Joe Fontana, Minister of Labour and Housing; Dave Levac, MPP for Brant, on behalf of Ontario Minister of Municipal Affairs and Housing, the Honourable John Gerretsen; and County of Brant Mayor Ron Eddy attended the ceremony.

"Shelter is one of the foundations upon which healthy communities and individual dignity are built," said Lloyd St. Amand, MP for Brant, on behalf of the Honourable Joe Fontana, Minister of Labour and Housing. "The Government of Canada is committed to working with our provincial, municipal and not-for-profit partners to develop housing solutions, like the River Bank Apartments project here in Paris, that meet the needs of their communities."

"One of the McGuinty government's goals is to provide affordable housing for Ontarians who need it," said MPP Levac. "This project in Paris represents another step in achieving this goal. By investing in affordable housing, we are investing in prosperity for our people and building stronger communities."

The River Bank Apartments is a $2.4 million project, including $614,784 from the Canada–Ontario Affordable Housing Program. It will provide 24 apartments at 120 – 140 West River Street in Paris, County of Brant. The project is sponsored by GK York Property Management and the units will be occupied by families, seniors, singles with low to moderate incomes, and disabled persons.
"The Council of the County of Brant is extremely appreciative of the participation of the governments of Canada and Ontario, and GK York Property Management in this important housing project, as it would not have happened without their participation," said Mayor Eddy.

The federal and provincial allocation under the Canada–Ontario Affordable Housing Program will be complemented by $369,660 from the County of Brant, plus other municipal financial incentives for this project.

In the County of Brant, the Government of Canada, through Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC), has contributed $2.5 million under the Canada–Ontario Affordable Housing Program Agreement.

The new federal-provincial agreement, signed on April 29, 2005, comprises a commitment of $301 million from each of the two levels of government. With this commitment, the federal, provincial and municipal governments will have invested more than $734 million over the life of the Canada–Ontario Affordable Housing Program. In total, the program will assist some 20,000 Ontario households by 2010.
