Nearly $30 Million Approved for New Affordable Housing Projects
CALGARY, Alberta, February 09, 2006 — Albertans in Calgary, Edmonton, Fort McMurray and Drumheller will have access to 278 new affordable housing units, thanks to almost $30 million in funding under phase two of the Canada – Alberta Affordable Housing Program Agreement.
“Canada’s New Government is proud to invest in such a significant program with Alberta to provide safe, affordable housing for hundreds of vulnerable and low-income Albertans,” said the Honourable Monte Solberg, Minister of Human Resources and Social Development. “This funding is helping families, seniors, low-income singles, and people with disabilities or special needs access longer-term housing and have an opportunity to live independently.”
The Canada – Alberta Affordable Housing Program Agreement assists in the creation of sustainable rental housing for low- to moderate-income Albertans, through the construction of new or renovated affordable housing units. Costs under the program are shared equally by the federal government and the Government of Alberta. Under phase two, $63 million has been announced for affordable housing projects, leading to the development of some 800 affordable housing units throughout the province.
The Honourable Ray Danyluk, Minister of Municipal Affairs and Housing, welcomed the announcement. “Premier Ed Stelmach has made a commitment to manage that growth and respond to the needs of Albertans, and this announcement demonstrates that we are taking positive action to make good on that promise.”
Since the creation of this initiative, close to $200 million has been committed to affordable housing projects throughout the province, leading to the support and development of approximately 3,700 housing units.
