Canadian REALTORS® Sponsor Session on Aboriginal Housing at World Urban Forum III

OTTAWA, Ontario, June 09, 2006 — The Canadian Real Estate Association, in cooperation with the International Housing Coalition, is presenting a Networking Event on Tuesday, June 20th as part of the World Urban Forum III.

The sector of Canadian housing most in need of action is aboriginal housing. More than half of all on-reserve housing is in substandard condition, and one study says there is an urgent need for 80,000 new units on reserves. Off reserve, 37 per cent of aboriginal people spend more than one-third of their incomes on housing. Aboriginal persons are also overrepresented in homeless populations in urban centres across the country.

This session will contribute ideas and present experience to assist in the search for solutions to the problem of aboriginal housing in Canada. It is based on the paper Aboriginal Housing in Canada: Building on Promising Practices, which was prepared by The Canadian Real Estate Association for the International Housing Coalition. This is one of 12 sessions organized by the IHC for presentation at World Urban Forum III. Moderator:

  Member of Six Nations of the Grand River Territory, Chairman of the Executive Committee of the Canadian Council for Aboriginal Business, and retired Senior Vice President, Bank of Montreal.

  Founding Director, M’akola Group of Societies, and Director, National Aboriginal Housing Association.
• Beverley Jacobs
  A traditional Mohawk woman who is President of the Native Women’s Association of Canada.
