Minister Solberg Announces Winners of CMHC Housing Research Grants
OTTAWA, Ontario, May 10, 2007 — Fifteen Canadian researchers will be awarded up to $25,000 each under Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation’s (CMHC’s) External Research Program (ERP), the Honourable Monte Solberg, Minister of Human Resources and Social Development and Minister Responsible for CMHC, announced today.
“Canada’s New Government is pleased to support the work of independent housing researchers across Canada through CMHC’s External Research Program,” said Minister Solberg. “Their research helps the housing industry to develop and improve sound building performance practices and green building technologies that lead to real benefits for Canadians.”
This year’s grants, which total approximately, $360,000, encourage researchers working in universities, private consulting firms, housing-related professions and the housing industry to conduct research on housing issues. Once a research project has been completed, CMHC publishes the final reports.
To date, the ERP has provided more than 620 grants for research on a number of topics such as energy efficiency, sustainability, and housing conditions.
Under the program launched in 1980, applications are submitted in the fall and reviewed in February. Grant recipients are selected on the basis of the quality of their proposals by a national committee of housing experts. The committee includes experienced researchers and practitioners in academic institutions, housing-related professions and business.
Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC) has been Canada's national housing agency for more than 60 years. CMHC is committed to helping Canadians access a wide choice of quality, affordable homes, while making vibrant, healthy communities and cities a reality across the country.
Results of a wide range of housing research sponsored by CMHC may be obtained by calling 1-800-668-2642.
